On the 9th of October 2022, Ubon Adventist International Mission School (UAIMS) and Ubon Seventh-day Adventist Church worked together to provide flood relief for flood victims in Ubon Ratchathani. Ubon’s flood has been increasing day by day as the water keeps coming from different provinces through the Mun River. Therefore, the action had to be taken right away!
Our team came to UAIMS’ campus at 9:00 AM to prepare the ingredients; and started cooking at 11:00 AM. We prepared more than 300 packs of stir-fried basil chicken with egg and rice for each portion.
Around 4:00 PM, the food was loaded at the back of our pick-up trucks. After a few minutes of waiting for the heavy rain to pass by, we left by 4:15 PM and reached our first destination – Seriprachathippatai Bridge (the bridge across the Mun River) at 4:30 PM.
Many houses were flooded or “under” the water, especially in the area near the Mun river. Therefore, people had to move their belongings and lived in makeshift tents built from old plastic tarps on either side of the bridge. Flood victims who were trapped in their homes tied ropes to baskets to get food from volunteers. Also, some requested drinking water.
As the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation’s report stated, 13 provinces in Thailand are still flooded. Thousands of households were affected. The donation for Ubon’s flood victims until this moment seems to be insufficient. They need far more than this.
Our second destination to distribute the food for flood victims was the Poethong area. On the paths that our team walked, the more households we could reach, the deeper water we needed to pass through.
